Malapascua is a small island located at the northern tip of Cebu. It boasts of some unique features and offers interesting sites for divers. Because it is just 2.5 kilometers in size, all diving sites are accessible for all based on the island.
Each resort in the island has a house reef and some are artificial with objects like metal frameworking sunk into the sand in order to form a reef. Corals are well established over the sunken items and travellers taking a cebucation can look for a great variety of macro life. The pioneer diving resort in Malapascua is Exotic Island Dive Resort which offers a variety of accommodations to guests. The following are the most famous diving sites in Malapascua that travellers who come to the island for its waters should not miss visiting.
This marine reserve is undamaged and has well established soft and hard corals. Its depth is about 12 meters. Divers here can find plenty of macro life that includes small crustacea on corals and sponges.
This site is also a marine reserve. It is a limestone rock located about an hour from the resort. This site is popular for some of its sea snakes in the water surrounding it. Those who will go here can experience rough waters which might push them to moor at the island`s south lea end where there is calmer water. Normally, divers here will go halfway around this island and expect to get picked up on the other side, letting them enjoy a full tour in a couple of dives. In the caves around the island, divers can see plenty of white-tip reef sharks. Also, this site has great soft and hard coral life.
This is one of the extraordinary diving sites of Malapascua. This sunken or sea mount island takes almost half the island`s size. The top plateau`s depth is between 15 meters to 23 meters. A sharp drop-off surrounds it. Those who will reach the place in the morning can possibly see at least a Thresher shark that appears from the depth to be cleaned at different cleaning stations around the plateau`s edge.
Some divers who get there at 5 in the morning after a 30-minute boat ride may see a big Thresher shark at the first cleaning station. The shark may stay for about 25 minutes. Also, Devil rays may be around and in April Manta rays tend to return and also come for cleaning.
This is the same as Monad shoal; however, located further away and smaller in size. Divers should get here early, have a 10-meter to 12-meter swim off the plateau and drop down to 30 meters. They can slowly fin through the water aiming to find Hammerhead sharks. But many of those who failed to find the shark still considered the dive an interesting experience.
This is a new diving site. Visitors here can find frog fish, nudibranches, octopus and miniature crabs.
This island is perfect for those aiming to spot nudibranch.
