Long-Distance Bus and Train Travel: Tips for Getting Some Shut Eye Before Reaching Your Final Destination

Anyone who has ever traveled overnight on a bus or train knows just how difficult it can be to fall asleep and then actually stay asleep for more than a few minutes at a time.

But there are ways that you can increase the odds of getting some shut-eye on your next overnight bus or train trip.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind the next time you travel to help you sleep soundly and wake up feeling refreshed.

Choose a Window Seat

First of all, you’ll want to make sure that you choose the right seat. This will have a big impact on the comfort of your journey, and it’s one of the best tips for enjoying a better night on a bus or train.

The best thing of all is to have two or three seats to yourself, allowing you to lie down or at least stretch out a bit more. But if that’s not possible, choose a window seat.

This is actually fairly subjective—some people prefer an aisle seat so they can stretch out a bit more. But if you like to lean on something to fall asleep, sit next to a window. This will provide you with added support for your head, allowing you to get to sleep easier.

Sit in the Middle

As well as sitting next to a window, you might want to choose a seat somewhere in the middle if you are traveling by bus. The back of the bus tends to be a bumpier ride, and the middle is usually considered the safest place. The extra peace of mind and smoother ride could help you to fall asleep sooner.

Use an Eye Mask

Car headlights flashing by can prove to be distracting, as can fellow passengers turning on the lights or using their phones. If you want to experience proper darkness to help you fall asleep easier, use an eye mask. Simply cover your eyes and fall into darkness, which should help you drift off.

Download a Smart Alarm App

If you have an Android smartphone, download a smart Android alarm clock app like Alarm Clock for Me. Using this, you can listen to your favorite tunes on a timer so you can fall asleep peacefully leaving your phone to switch off on its own. It can also wake you up gently with another tune in the morning so you wake up feeling fresh rather than exhausted.

Invest in Noise-Canceling Headphones

Finally, you may want to invest in a pair of high-quality noise-canceling headphones. These will block out all sounds so you can enjoy perfect peace and quiet no matter what is going on around you. Or you can listen to music on the aforementioned smartphone app while you drift off with no distractions.

Sleep Better on Your Travels

Traveling overnight on trains and buses is often one of the worst parts of travel. So ensure you get more sleep on your next overnight journey by following the tips above. These should help you to increase your odds of sleeping soundly so that your overnight trips won’t leave you feeling exhausted.
